Winter flying means a lot of standing still. You wait for the light at a dawn shoot, hold a hover on a cold ridge, and watch the battery drop faster than it should. Your hands are busy on the sticks, so your head and ears have to stay warm without any help. From autumn to the end of winter, this rolled cuff beanie is the one I wear.

Winter Drone Hat – Beanie
It is a plain knit beanie with an embroidered Drone Pilot emblem on the cuff, so you can wear it on a job and off it. If you are putting together a winter kit, my cold-weather drone flying guide has more on what to pack.

Fit and care
It is unisex and one size fits most. You can roll the cuff to change how much of your ears it covers, and it is flexible enough to wear under a hood or a headset. It is light and packs small enough to keep in a standard drone case.
Hand wash it in cool water with a mild detergent, then lay it flat on a towel to dry. Don’t machine wash, tumble dry or dry clean it. High heat can damage the acrylic fibers and make the beanie shrink.
Is it warm enough for winter flying?
The double-layer knit and rolled cuff hold heat in around your ears, and it keeps you warm for outdoor drone work down to about 0°C. When it gets colder than that, wear a thermal headband underneath and add a drone pilot hoodie on top. For warmer months, have a look at the lighter drone pilot hats.
